Finding Health Insurance

Everyday, there are million of people across America who are searching for health insurance that is not only affordable, but that will also cover real medical needs, not only for emergencies, but for everyday needs. In this article you’ll learn more about how to purchase health insurance, how to find the best prices for health insurance policies, and how to decide between different health insurance companies.

Even if you are young, single and/or have no dependents you still need health insurance. Health insurance generally covers medical visits and treatment, emergency room treatment, and might also at an optional higher cost, cover the prescriptions and the payments to have nurses or help if you need that as well. Depending on your particular needs, you should choose a health insurance policy that will fit your budget and cover your medical needs.

If you are employed and have health insurance coverage through your employer, congratulations. If you have dependent coverage or have the option to purchase dependent coverage through your employer, then count yourself very lucky. However, you may find that more companies are passing off the entire cost of family health insurance coverage to the employee. In this instance, it may make more economic sense for you to shop around for a family heath insurance policy. Family health insurance coverage is important for families. Even if you believe that you can’t afford it, think of the alternative. What would happen if a family member suddenly becomes ill and requires extensive treatment or hospitalization? No one wants to be in that situation, and very few people could afford the out of pocket costs for extended or catastrophic health care.

How then do you go about finding more information about health insurance? In order to make an informed choice about health insurance you need to do a little research. Start off by making a list of the insurance companies that offer health insurance where you live, as well as the types of health insurance that are available. Call for each company’s informational brochure. You don’t need to give them any details at this time. Just state that you are shopping around and would like some written information. List options that are important to you, such as: coverage for prescriptions, freedom to see any doctor anywhere, or limitation to network participating doctors. Go through each brochure and list what you like and dislike most about that company’s health insurance products. At this stage, you won’t know all the fine print exclusions, but for this exercise, you want to know the major advantages and disadvantages of each health insurance company.

Health insurance rates will differ from company to company, what you will also find is that each company offers different plans and different levels of coverage. These differences generally fall within as the same general categories depending on the type of plan. For example,, check if prescriptions are covered, what doctors can you see, do you need a primary care physician, is there an annual deductible before coverage kicks in, how much is your co-payment when you see the doctor and what is the co-payment if you see a specialist? Will you need to have a referral to see the specialist or what other fees will you incur for that particular health insurance plan? Are routine lab tests covered? By reviewing each health insurance company’s plans, you will get an idea of what is covered and what you need to pay extra for.

Review your medical needs and that of your dependents. If there is a family history of, say for example, asthma, then you’ll want prescription drug coverage. Once you’ve determined what your current and potential medical needs are, you can make a better decision as to the types of health insurance coverage you need.
